Gender Norms Shattered as Ghana Sees More Female Candidates than Males for 2023 BECE

In a groundbreaking shift, the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has witnessed a higher number of female students participating compared to their male counterparts.

This notable deviation from traditional gender norms has brought attention to the changing dynamics in education and gender equality in the country.

The total number of candidates taking part in this year’s BECE is an impressive 600,714. Of this number, 300,323 are males and remarkably, 300,391 are females.

The slight disparity of only 68 candidates between the two genders demonstrates the remarkable progress being made towards achieving gender balance and empowering young girls in education.

This shift is not an isolated incident but rather part of a wider movement within the Ghanaian education system. Over the past decade, there has been a concerted effort to encourage female students to pursue education at all levels, including primary and secondary education.

The sheer number of participating schools is also noteworthy, with a staggering 18,983 schools involved in this year’s examinations.

To ensure the smooth running of the BECE, the number of supervisors has been set at 2,137, while an additional 2,000 assistant supervisors are assisting in the examination process.

This ensures that the examination is conducted in a fair and organized manner, allowing students to perform to the best of their abilities.

Additionally, 21,027 invigilators are monitoring the examination halls to maintain integrity and prevent any form of malpractice.
