Newly posted teachers from Colleges of Education and public universities have announced plans to stage a protest dubbed “Ye Gye Yɛn Sika” (“We Want Our Money”) in Accra on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
The planned demonstration comes in response to months of unpaid salary arrears that have left many teachers struggling to survive.
The teachers explain that those posted from Colleges of Education have gone a full year without receiving any salary, while their counterparts from public universities are owed at least eight months of arrears.
They also lament the delay in the issuance of staff ID numbers, a requirement for salary validation, stressing that this administrative bottleneck has worsened their plight.
Organizers of the protest say the government has until the end of September to address their grievances by releasing funds or issuing the IDs needed for payment.
And if their demands are not met, the demonstration will proceed as planned.
Many of the affected teachers describe dire personal hardships, including falling into rent arrears, struggling to afford food and utilities, and in some cases being unable to access medical care.

Some have even alleged that colleagues have died because they could not afford treatment or necessary medicines.
The group, led by Simon Kofi Nartey, has appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene by instructing the Ministry of Finance to release the funds.
They argue that their continued service in classrooms despite these challenges demonstrates their commitment to national development and that it is only fair for the government to honour its obligations.
