The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the introduction of a new literature text for the English Language paper of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), effective from 2027 to 2031.
In a circular signed by Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, Director of Schools and Instructions Division, on behalf of the Ag. Director-General, GES directed all Regional Directors of Education to communicate the changes to their respective Metro, Municipal, and District Directors for onward dissemination to heads of Junior High Schools, teachers, and learners.
The newly approved text, titled The Beacon of Light and published by Excellence and Elco Publications, has been recommended by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to replace the long-standing anthology The Cockcrow, which has served as the core literature text for more than a decade.
According to NaCCA, The Beacon of Light was carefully assessed and approved because it aligns strongly with the Standard-Based Curriculum introduced at the Junior High School level.
The Council explained that the new text incorporates relevant Ghanaian values while also offering fresh content to enrich teaching and learning.
GES noted that The Cockcrow, which has been used for over ten years, had become repetitive in test items and outlived its relevance under the new curriculum framework.
The change, therefore, is intended to refresh the literature component of the English Language paper and provide learners with a resource that reflects modern curriculum goals and national values.

Regional Directors have been instructed to ensure that schools prepare adequately for the transition so that teachers and students are fully equipped to engage with the new text ahead of its adoption in the 2027 BECE.
