Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.Psa 127:1
Yesterday, we saw that THE WATCHMEN, as used in the verse above are people who are seeing to it that, day-in and day-out they will adhere the LAWS and also make sure people also obeyed it. They walk in the laws and are always on the watch not to flout. But the more they do, the more they go contrary to it. So David said, “UNLESS THE LORD … ALL THEIR EFFORTS ARE IN VAIN.”
Today let’s delve DEEPER. What then is the law, as asked yesterday? The law was God’s standards and guidelines given to men to obey in other for them(man) to have a right standing with Him(God). The law which was given to man by then wasn’t only the 10 commandment as many think but also about 613 other articles of the law. All these needed to be kept before a man can have right standing with God.
But the question is, was man able to obey the lawZ? Did man had a right standing with God through the Law? The answer is an award winning “NO”. On the contrary, it was through the law that sin had power to keep man under bondage and separated man from God. The law rather made men to live in sin and enslaved them. Mercy!
…. But through the law we become conscious of sin. (Romans 3:20 NIV)
Did you see that? The law which was established to save, now became a gateway for SIN. It rather made man to sin more. It pains me so much when I see Christians of this generation still struggling to keep all the laws with the notion that doing so will take them to heaven (to be saved). The good news is that, God wants you to stop because it can’t save you. The only person that can save you is Jesus Christ.
So the question is, how did Jesus save us from the law? He did so by ending all the laws through his death and then established a new covenant of GRACE.
Paul said: Christ is the END OF THE LAW, so that there may righteousness for everyone who Believes. (Romans 10:4 NIV)
Jesus Christ died to save us from the power of SIN which was the law.(read 1Corinthians 15:56). He redeemed us from it because the law was unable save. No wonder David said “Unless the lord …You guard in vain.”
So Paul put it straight forward that :
But now we have been DELIVERED from the LAW. So that we serve in the ways of the spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. (Romans 7:6 NIV)
Hallelujah! We are no more under law. We are set free from it through Jesus Christ, so now we serve in the new way of the spirit.
Let me ask you this question, if the law was able to save, why should Jesus have to sacrifice his life for us? Think about it.
Note: It is no longer your works but it is the Grace of God(Christ’s finished works).
Let’s meet tomorrow for more insight in Jesus name.
