The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has made an impressive debut in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings by ranking first in Ghana for its contributions to advancing good health and well-being, as part of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. The rankings were announced on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
THE Impact Rankings is a global performance dashboard that evaluates universities based on the United Nations’ SDGs. It assesses universities across four key areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching, using carefully calibrated indicators.
A total of 2,125 participating universities from 125 countries/regions took part in the 2024 Impact Rankings.
UCC showcased its excellence by achieving a score of 75.8, placing it at the top nationally in terms of contributions to global good health and well-being.
The SDG 3 category of the rankings evaluates universities based on their efforts to advance universal health coverage, reduce preventable deaths, and enhance public health through innovative research, comprehensive health services, and community outreach programs.
Additionally, UCC was ranked second in Ghana for providing quality education (SDG 4).
The SDG 4 category assesses universities’ commitment to promoting accessible education at all levels, from childhood development through secondary education and beyond.
UCC equips students with relevant skills and fosters effective learning outcomes necessary for the future workforce. A total of 1,681 universities from 122 countries/regions participated in this category.
Standing out from other universities in Ghana, UCC was the only university ranked on SDG 14, which focuses on Life Below Water.
This indicates the university’s dedication to sustainable management of marine resources, protection of coastal ecosystems, and efforts to combat marine pollution through research, education, and direct action to preserve marine biodiversity.
A total of 628 universities from 90 countries/regions were recognized for their contributions to SDG 14.
On a global scale, UCC achieved rankings in the band of 101-200 for both global good health and well-being (SDG 3), and the provision of quality education (SDG 4).
In terms of Life Below Water (SDG 14), the university achieved a ranking in the band of 201-300.
Overall, UCC was placed in the band of 601-800 globally in this year’s THE Impact Rankings, surpassing expectations for its maiden appearance.
