WhatsApp will soon discontinue support for 18 Android models and 3 iPhone models, marking the end of an era for users of these older devices.
As the new year ushers in fresh beginnings, it also brings frustration for those who strive to keep their aging phones operational.
The changes to WhatsApp’s compatibility with operating systems mean that some older smartphones will no longer be able to run the app.
Although the number of affected users is not expected to be large, those who have kept their devices in working condition for over a decade should take note.

January 1, 2025:
WhatsApp will stop supporting Android KitKat OS and older versions.
Users with KitKat can continue using WhatsApp if their devices can be updated to a more recent OS.
However, several older phone models no longer receive official updates from manufacturers, making upgrades impossible without risky DIY tinkering that could void warranties and render devices inoperable.

Affected Android Models:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, explains that these changes are part of regular updates to ensure the app remains secure and functional on newer phones.
May 5, 2025:
WhatsApp will cease to support iOS versions earlier than 15.1.
While some iPhone users can update their devices to comply, others can only upgrade to iOS 12.5.7.
The affected iPhone models include:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus

Both the regular WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business will be affected by these updates, as they share the same system requirements.
