President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the rotational policy of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations in a move aimed at reducing government expenditure, according to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The decision comes as the government seeks to prioritize spending on critical sectors facing funding shortfalls.
In a statement, Felix Ofosu explained that while the annual Independence Day celebrations hold significant importance, the practice of hosting them in different regional capitals has become prohibitively expensive.
“In the spirit of cutting down on government expenditure, on non-essential expenditure, President Mahama has instructed that this rotational policy be suspended,” Ofosu stated.

He further noted that some past celebrations hosted outside Accra had cost as much as GH¢15 million.
This year’s 68th Independence Day Celebration, themed “Reflect, Review and Reset,” will now be held at the Presidency in Accra, rather than at the traditional Independence Square or a designated regional venue.
Mahama believes it is time to reprioritize government spending to focus on critical sectors that lack adequate funding.
