Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana who meet the qualifications for tertiary education will soon be able to pursue their academic goals without the burden of tuition fees.

The government, through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Ministry of Education, is set to roll out Free Tertiary Education for PWDs in the coming weeks, fulfilling a key campaign promise of President John Mahama.

Speaking to GBC Obonu News during a special thanksgiving service in Lashibi, Accra, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, confirmed that consultations have been finalized and the policy is ready for implementation.

This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to its 120-day social contract with the people.

“Within the 120 days we’ll also establish the Women’s Development Bank. Plans are far advanced, and by the grace of God, we’ve had extensive conversations with some stakeholders, and I’m sure very soon you’ll be hearing of what we’re doing in that direction. Also, we’re looking at many issues around women, the free sanitary pad for the schools: that, I’m also collaborating with the Ministry of Education”

“My Ministry is positioned that it is cross sectorial so we’re working with other Ministries to achieve the vision. Therefore, in our 120 days charge, we have a lot of work to do to and to work with other ministries like Trade and Agric to ensure that the things that His Excellency has set to do for the people of Ghana—the women, children, men, and everybody—we realise it.”

Dr. Lartey highlighted the Ministry’s broad mandate, emphasizing President Mahama’s commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians, including the protection of children and the decentralization of the school feeding program to ensure quality food for all.

The Minister also announced progress on other initiatives, including the operationalization of the Women’s Development Bank within the same 120-day timeframe.

This bank, staffed and managed entirely by women, will provide financial support for women entrepreneurs. Discussions are also ongoing with the Ministry of Education regarding the provision of free sanitary pads for schoolgirls.
