President John Mahama has announced plans to introduce short military training for National Service Scheme (NSS) personnel in order to instill a sense of fitness and discipline among them as they serve the country.
The President made this announcement during his State of the Nation Address on 27th February, 2025, where he also addressed the ongoing investigation into the ghost name scandal involving the National Service Authority (NSA).
“We will introduce short military training as part of our National Service Scheme. This will instil a sense of fitness and discipline in our youth,” President Mahama said.
He also spoke about the need to address challenges in the administration of scholarships, which has faced numerous issues in the past.

The President further emphasized his commitment to holding those responsible for the ghost name scandal accountable through the Operation Recover All Loot policy.
“Such blatant theft of public funds must not go unpunished,” he stated, noting that some suspects have fled the country and their assets have been frozen.
The ghost name scandal involved the fraudulent addition of over 80,000 names to the NSS program, resulting in potential earnings of more than 50 million Ghana cedis every month.
President Mahama has directed that the suspects be declared wanted and their assets traced and frozen.
