The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that President John Mahama has issued a directive for the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education.
This decision comes in response to concerns raised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) over delayed promotions for junior-ranked teachers, which had prompted the union to threaten a strike on April 30, 2025.
Speaking at the launch of the sanitary pad distribution initiative for schoolgirls on April 24, 2025, the Minister disclosed that the directive aims to address long-standing grievances among deputy directors.
Despite challenges such as limited office space, the President has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to ensure that promotions are granted without delay.
Minister Iddrisu highlighted that the President had acknowledged the struggles faced by deputy directors in advancing their careers due to infrastructural constraints.
He reassured teachers that their promotions would be processed regardless of space limitations, allowing them to serve in their new roles effectively.
The General Secretary of GNAT, Musah Tanko, has welcomed the directive, expressing gratitude to the President and the Education Minister for their swift intervention.
In an interaction with TV3 on 25th April, 2025, Musah confirmed that the union has suspended its planned strike, citing the directive as a significant step forward for teachers across the country.
He emphasised that teachers across Ghana appreciate the leadership’s response to their concerns and view it as a commitment to improving their working conditions.
He commended the President, the Minister, and the Director General for recognising the importance of career progression within the Ghana Education Service.
