TTAG commends gov’t decision to reform teacher licensure exams

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has welcomed the government’s decision to revise the teacher licensure examination process, citing inconsistencies between the current Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) programmes and the structure of the exams.

Speaking at TTAG’s 29th Annual Delegates Congress in Hohoe, President Soale Razak emphasised the need for alignment between the curriculum content and the assessment methods to ensure fair and effective evaluation.

He praised the ongoing discussions with key stakeholders aimed at addressing challenges associated with the exam.

“There is a disconnect between the B.Ed. curriculum and the examination structure, coupled with inadequate preparation time and resources,” Mr. Razak stated.

“We commend the National Teaching Council, the Ministry, and the Committee for engaging TTAG in meaningful dialogue to reform the exam while maintaining high standards,” he added.

The teacher licensure examination was introduced in September 2018 during the Akufo-Addo administration. During last year’s presidential election, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pledged to eliminate the exams.

Mr. Razak urged the government to grant the association a representation in critical decision-making processes concerning the education sector. He stressed the importance of including teacher trainees’ perspectives in policy formulation.

“In the interest of national development, TTAG should not only be invited to share its position on policies but actively participate in committees making key decisions,” he noted.

Representing President John Mahama at the congress, Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to partnerships in the education sector.

He outlined plans to deepen collaboration with organizations such as UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNESCO, and the World Bank to enhance teacher training programs.

“Our education system must rely on strategic and symbolic partnerships to ensure sustainable transformation,” Dr. Apaak said. “We will also introduce leadership training for principals and digital literacy programs for college tutors.”
