The National Teaching Council (NTC) has officially rolled out a comprehensive reform of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), aimed at streamlining the certification process and aligning it more closely with teacher training programmes across the country.

GTLE Now Integrated into Final Year Exams

Under the previous system, teacher trainees were required to sit for the GTLE a full year after completing their training. This policy has now been abolished.

The NTC has disclosed that with the new reforms, the GTLE is now fully integrated into the final year examination schedule of accredited teacher training institutions.

This move is expected to reduce delays in certification and ease the transition from training to professional practice.

Candidates Can Now Write GTLE in Their Own Colleges

Previously, candidates were barred from writing the GTLE in their own colleges or institutions of training.

According to the NTC, this restriction has been lifted.

Trainees will now be permitted to sit for the exam within their own institutions, improving convenience and reducing logistical challenges.

Teaching Practice Now Counts Toward Pedagogy Scores

One of the most significant changes is the inclusion of a practical teaching component in the Pedagogy assessment.

Under the old system, Pedagogy scores were based solely on theoretical examination, marked out of 100%.

This, according to the NTC, has been replaced with a blended scoring model:

  • 30% of the Pedagogy score will now come from assessed teaching practice.
  • 70% will be based on the theoretical Pedagogy paper.

This change reflects the Council’s commitment to holistic teacher development—recognising that effective teaching requires both knowledge and classroom competence.

These reforms are part of the NTC’s broader mission to raise professional standards and ensure that every licensed teacher is well-prepared for the demands of the classroom.
