The National Conference of the Principals of Colleges of Education-Ghana(PRINCOF) wrote to the Honorable Minister of Education, Hon. Yaw Osei Adutwu, on 31st October 2022 to seek his approval for teacher trainees to start feeding themselves, effective 7th November 2022.
PRINCOF stated that the colleges can not continue to provide three meals a day for students at Six cedis Fifty pesewas( Gh¢6.50) as prices of all food items have astronomically shot up.
Again, food suppliers have also refused to supply food items to the colleges due to the high indebtedness of the colleges to these suppliers.
The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng, has indicated the subject has reached them and GTEC is working through the MoE to resolve the funding challenge.
In a post he shared on his Facebook wall, He wrote;
“On PRINCOF’s request for permission to ask students in Colleges of Education to fend for themselves…..
GTEC is working through the MoE to resolve the funding challenge.
The Ministry of Finance is equally aware of the urgency of the situation and is working very swiftly to resolve all outstanding financial obligations/commitments.
The public is hereby assured of our commitment to work with all relevant institutions to resolve any disruption within the food supply chain in our Colleges of Education even ahead of the November 7th ultimatum.”
