The Ghana Education Service (GES) has clarified that the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school placement exercise will be determined mainly by candidates’ raw scores and not by fixed aggregate cut-off points, contrary to reports circulating on social media.

In a statement shared by the GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, the service stressed that the widely publicised claims of predetermined cut-off marks for placements are false and misleading.
According to GES, while raw scores remain the primary factor in the placement process, other considerations also influence placement outcomes.
These include:
- The level of subscription and competitiveness of a particular school.
- The demand for specific programmes.
- The aggregate score of the candidate.
- Residential preferences (day or boarding).
- Catchment area considerations.
GES emphasised that the idea of fixed cut-off points is “misleading and has no basis in the placement process,” cautioning parents, guardians, and students to disregard such misinformation.
“The placement system is transparent, fair, and merit-based, ensuring every candidate has an equal opportunity,” the statement assured.
The service also warned the public to be wary of individuals or groups spreading false information intended to exploit or mislead unsuspecting candidates and their families.
