ToggleBrief History
St. Francis College of Education, affectionately known as FRANCO, was reopened for the third time on 14th February 1947, adopting St. Francis Xavier as its patron saint. Originally situated at “Kpodziga,” the college earned nicknames such as “Gborto College” and “Tsiveme College.”
Founded by Rev. Fr. Bucking, Rev. Fr. Feldmann, and Most Rev. Fr. Joseph Gerald Holland, the college is under the Episcopal jurisdiction of the Ho Diocese.
Three communities—Bla, Kpeme, and Abansi of the Gbi Traditional Area—donated 63 acres of land for its establishment, later expanded to 91 acres in 1975.
Initially an all-male institution with 30 students, FRANCO became co-educational in 1954, enrolling 30 women.
Over the years, the Catholic Church, local community, and college have fostered a mutually supportive relationship.
The college contributes to local needs by offering its vehicles and regularly hosting church events such as Patron Saints Day and mission outreach.
Despite challenges, FRANCO has consistently excelled academically. Though primarily focused on training teachers, FRANCO alumni have distinguished themselves in diverse sectors—education, law, politics, finance, public service, and international commerce.
