Brief Background

The Wiawso College of Education is a teacher education college in the Sefwi-Wiawso District, Western North Region, Ghana.

Wiawso College of Education (popularly called Legon of the West) traces its origin to Kumasi.

The college was formally opened in 1952 under the name Wiawso Body Corporate Training College.

On 29th October 1964, the college was moved to Sefwi Wiawso (municipal district) in the Western Region and was renamed Wiawso Anglican Training College (WATICO).

The college has offered various programmes over the years. These include;

  1. The College started with a two–year Teacher’s Certificate “B” course.
  2. In 1963 the course was extended to four years for the award of Teacher’s Certificate “A”.
  3. The College later offered three year post- secondary certificate “A”.
  4. It was accredited as a tertiary institution in October 2007, and it was among fifteen quasi-specialist Colleges that offer Science, Mathematics and Technical Education for the award of Diploma in Basic education.

Currently, It is one of the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana and is affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba.

WATICO has received an Institutional accreditation from Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to run the following programmes;

  1. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood programme (regular).
  2. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Primary Education programme (regular).
  3. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Junior High School Programme (regular), with specialism in;
    a. Science
    b. Technical
    c. Home economics
    d. Agriculture science
    e. Visual arts

The school is aimed at producing safe teachers who are academically sound, professionally competent, ready to serve the community, and teachers who will not cause harm physically and mentally to pupils.

However, D7 is not an acceptable grade for getting admission into Wiawso College of Education. Your only guarantee for admission is to PASS in your WASSCE with a good grade(A1-C6)

Admission Requirements

The general requirement for admission to the 4-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Programme is as follows:

WASSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising Three (3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of

SSSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising Three(3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

Step-by-step application guide

  1. Confirm you’re eligible
    • WASSCE: Credit passes (A1–C6) in 6 subjects—3 core (English Language, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies) plus 3 relevant electives.
    • SSSCE: Credit passes (A–D) in the same structure (3 core + 3 electives).
    • TVET, GCE/GBCE/ABCE, and foreign-qualification routes are also accepted (see full circular for details).
  1. Gather what you need before paying
    • Active mobile number (you’ll get SMS updates).
    • Email address.
    • Passport photo in JPG/JPEG, ≤ 40 KB.
    • Your WAEC index number
  1. Buy an application e-voucher
    • Pay at any CBG branch or via mobile money by dialing *924*8# (all networks).
    • You’ll receive a PIN and Serial Number plus the portal address. (Amounts can change—use the current figure shown when you dial or at the bank.)
  1. Go to the official portal
  1. Fill the online form carefully
    • Enter your biodata and academic details.
    • Upload your passport photo (JPG/JPEG, ≤ 40 KB).
    • Choose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd College choices in order of preference.
    • Select one Ghanaian Language offered in your chosen college(s).
    • Use Preview to check, then Edit if needed before final submit.
  1. Print and post your application
    • After submitting online, print the completed form.
    • Attach one passport photo and results slip(s) (if available).
    • Send by EMS (Ghana Post priority) to the Principal of your 1st-choice college.
  1. Track updates
    • You’ll get SMS confirming receipt, and later admission offers (also by SMS). Keep your phone on and number active.
  1. Results verification & integrity
    • Colleges will verify your results with WAEC. Submitting false documents has legal consequences.

Pro tips to avoid delays

  • Use your own phone number and email (not a friend’s/café’s).
  • Keep your voucher safe for logins/edits.
  • Make sure your photo size and format meet the spec to prevent upload errors.
  • Post your EMS envelope early and keep the receipt/tracking
