In an official communique dated 20th July, 2023, the management of Bagabaga College of Education has declared a mandate that has left the student body, specifically the Student Representative Council (SRC) and graduands of the 2022/2023 academic year, feeling disheartened and discontented.

The directive stipulates that all graduating students must make an additional payment of GH¢75.00 as a supplementary contribution to their Graduation Fee for the forthcoming 9th Congregation, scheduled to be held on 29th July 2023.

The intricacies surrounding this announcement have garnered attention and concern, prompting calls for a deeper understanding of the rationale behind this new financial obligation. According to the release, the GH¢75.00 fee is intended to cover various aspects that have been bundled into the overall Graduation Fee.

These components include the payment of Alumni dues, which supposedly contributes to the support and maintenance of the college’s strong network of former students. Additionally, the fee is said to encompass the cost of a Certificate Folder and four certified photocopies of the graduation certificate for each student.

While the administration may argue that these charges are necessary to maintain the college’s alumni association and provide essential materials for the graduation ceremony, the students and their Student Representative Council (SRC) have voiced their grievances and concerns over the sudden imposition of this additional financial burden.

The students’ discontent is understandable, considering that they had already paid a substantial fee of GH¢400.00 towards their graduation expenses.

The decision to introduce further charges at a late stage has caught many off-guard, leaving them scrambling to find the extra funds. For some students, especially those from financially challenged backgrounds, this unexpected financial demand could create undue hardship and jeopardize their participation in the momentous occasion of their graduation.
