Cancel Teacher Trainees Allowances, “Let them find other avenues to source fund”

The Mahama Government in the 2013/2014 academic year scrapped the payment of a monthly allowance of GH¢452 to the trainees in the country.

This generated a hue and cries among the trainees and some parents, and was criticized by the then Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party(NPP).

Nana Akufo-Addo, The then Presidential candidate of the NPP promised to restore it together with that of trainee nurses if voted into office.

In fulfillment of the promise, the government announced in August 2017 that it will from October that year begin giving each trainee GHC400, from which GH¢196 will use to pay for trainees’ utilities.

Trainees from both the Nursing and Colleges of Education are still enjoying this allowance.

But, there are currently alot of controversies, development and suggestions from some high profiles for the Government to cancel the allowances for trainees. They strongly believe it has served it purpose.

The President for the The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), Mr. Prince Obeng Himah has joined the call.

Speaking to GBC News, Mr. Obeng-Himah said ” it is time for the government to consider allowing students of Colleges of Education to apply for student loans or find other avenues to source fund.

One could read his suggestions and made deductions that the allowance paid by the government to teacher trainees sounds a bit weird to the heads of teacher trainees.

Mr.Obeng also requested from the government to take a critical look at the Association’s challenge.

He wants the government to commence a broader consultation on challenges that the Association is going through because the steps taken earlier have corroborated unsuccessfully, therefore, they need the best since the ‘said’ challenge still exists.
