Founded in 1948 by Rev. Fr. Joseph Moulders, St. Joseph’s College of Education holds a distinguished place in Ghana’s educational history.
Established on land donated by Nana Fosu Gyeabour Akoto I, Bechemanhene, and his elders in 1947, it was the first teacher training college in the Ahafo Region.
Originally an all-male institution, it became coeducational in 1974. Rooted in Catholic values, the college’s mission is to foster discipline, creativity, and patriotism among aspiring teachers, inspired by the motto ‘OBI DAN BI’, symbolizing interdependence for the common good.
From its humble beginnings, St. Joseph’s College of Education has played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of Ghana. Its early programs included a diverse range of offerings:
- Two-year Certificate ‘B’
- Four-year Certificate ‘A’
- Mathematics and Science Specialist
- Two-year Post-Secondary (Commercial/Vocational Skills) and General
- Four-year Post Middle Certificate ‘A’
- Modular programs
- Three-year Post-Secondary Certificate ‘A’
- Diploma in Basic Education
- Sandwich programs for Untrained Teachers
- Certificate ‘A’ to Diploma in Basic Education upgrade

Admission Requirements
St. Joseph’s College of Education maintains rigorous admission standards to ensure the quality of its student body.
Prospective students typically need to meet the following criteria:
WASSCE Holders
Credit passes (A1-C6) in six subjects, including English Language, Core Mathematics, and three relevant electives.
SSSCE Holders
Credit passes (A-D) in six subjects, including English Language, Core Mathematics, and three relevant electives.
Mature Applicants
Individuals aged 25 or older with GCE/SSSCE/WASSCE/DBS or RSA certificates may apply if they successfully pass the General Aptitude Test (GAT) and Subject Area Test (SAT).
Foreign Applicants
Candidates with foreign qualifications are required to seek equivalence determination from the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
