TTAG commends government for clearing allowance arrears for 2023/2024 academic year

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has praised the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Education and the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) for disbursing the three months’ allowance arrears owed to teacher trainees for the 2023/2024 academic year.

TTAG considers the payments authorized and released on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, a substantial demonstration of the government’s commitment to supporting the development and welfare of teacher trainees in Ghana.

According to a formal statement released by TTAG, the association views this payment as a direct acknowledgment of teacher trainees’ crucial role in shaping the future of Ghana’s education sector.

The association reiterated that the allowance payments are vital in alleviating the financial constraints faced by trainees, allowing them to dedicate their resources and attention to their academic pursuits and practical training exercises.

“The government’s commitment to supporting teacher trainees is evident in this payment, showcasing her dedication to education and the development of future educators”, the statement emphasized.

While expressing sincere gratitude for the recent disbursement, TTAG also formally appealed to the government to expedite the release of allowances for the first semester of the current academic year -2024/2025.

” While we commend the Government, we are appealing to the Government through the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) to expedite the release of the allowances for the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year,” the statement read.

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) is a national students’ association representing all teacher trainees in public Colleges of Education across Ghana.

TTAG has been a vocal advocate for the rights and welfare of teacher trainees. Over the years, the association has played a pivotal role in ensuring that the concerns of teacher trainees are heard and addressed at the national level.

The association also serves as a vital link between teacher trainees, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant stakeholders, working collaboratively to improve the quality of teacher education in Ghana.

In a related development, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, the Acting CEO of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), has reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to the prompt payment of the teacher trainee allowances.

Dr. Shiraz reiterated that ensuring the timely disbursement of these allowances remains a top priority for the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).
