Brief History

The Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong, is a co-educational teacher-training college in Akropong in the Akwapim North district of the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The college was the first institution of higher learning to be established on 3rd July 1848 to train teacher-catechists for the eventual Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast.

It has gone through a series of previous names, including the Presbyterian Training College, the Scottish Mission Teacher Training College, the Basel Mission Seminary and now the Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong .

The college is accredited by the National Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Education, Ghana as a Degree Research Institution affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba.

It is now a fully-fledged public institution with the Ghana Education Service system under the auspices of the Government of Ghana.

Initially, the plan was to upgrade the college to a university but that idea was abandoned after the church founded the Presbyterian University College in 1998.

The college started with a five-year teacher’s certificate course and later run programmes which included the Cert ‘A’ 4-year course, 2-year Cert ‘B’ the 2-year Post ‘B’, 2-year post-secondary, 3-year Post Secondary and 2-year Specialist course in Science, Agriculture,  Special Education and other diploma programmes that started in 2004.

Currently, the Presbyterian College of Education runs four (4)-year B.Ed programmes which are;

    a. Mathematics
    b. Science
    c. Social Studies
    d. RME
    e. Visual Arts
    f. Technical
    g. I.C.T.
    h. Home Economics
    i. History
    j. Agriculture Science

Admission Requirements

The general requirement for admission to the 4-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Programme is as follows:

WASSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising Three (3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of

SSSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising Three(3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

Candidates who are yet to write either the WASSCE or NABPTEX examinations this year can also apply as awaiting results
