The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it will launch a full-scale investigation into allegations of malpractice during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), following reports aired by JoyNews TV suggesting possible instances of cheating in some schools.
In a statement issued by the GES Public Relations Unit and signed by Head of Public Relations, Mr. Daniel Fenyi, management said it had requested access to the full documentary, including the original transcripts, to carefully scrutinise the claims before initiating formal investigations.
“Management reiterates its absolute aversion to examination malpractice. Cheating undermines the integrity of our education system, destroys meritocracy, and produces graduates who lack the competencies required for national development,” the statement read.
The GES further assured the public that it takes such allegations seriously and will work closely with relevant agencies, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Security, and law enforcement bodies, to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and the GES Council have pledged their full support to enforce strict disciplinary action against any official—teaching or non-teaching—found to have aided or abetted cheating in the examination process. Offenders will face sanctions in line with the law and established Service regulations.
The Service also used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of Ghana’s examinations and maintaining public confidence in the education system.
“GES remains committed to upholding the integrity of examinations and will collaborate fully with WAEC, National Security, and law enforcement agencies to stamp out this menace,” the statement concluded.
The 2025 BECE remains a crucial milestone for thousands of students transitioning from junior high to senior high school, and education stakeholders have called for transparency and swift action to protect the value of the nation’s basic education certificate.
