OSP Suspends Salaries of 800 Teachers in Northern Region, GNAT Disagrees

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has ordered the suspension of salaries for 800 teachers in the Northern Region.

This decision comes in the wake of the OSP uncovering serious infractions and launching investigations into the matter.

According to information obtained from reliable sources, the OSP has identified certain irregularities in the payment process of these teachers and has deemed it necessary to halt their salaries.

While the OSP’s intentions may be rooted in ensuring accountability and transparency, the move has sparked disagreement from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the OSP’s decision.

Furthermore, he laid down an ultimatum for the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the OSP, warning that if the suspended salaries are not paid within five working days, they may face protests and unrest.

Tanko highlighted the importance of maintaining open channels of communication between employers and employees, particularly under the provisions of the labour law.

He emphasized that tensions are already escalating among teachers in the Northern Region, and the responsibility for any resulting consequences would lie squarely on the OSP and GES if the situation remains unresolved by the end of next week.

“At the school level, there are standing protocols the heads of the institutions validate before the teacher is paid, in the northern region now, tensions are building up, we want to tell the employer that under the labour law, you keep the communication lines open, if by close of next week Friday, the salaries are not paid, the OSP and GES must blame themselves,” he stated
