The July 2023 Batch of the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association – comprising twelve thousand, five hundred and ninety-four (12,594) nursing and midwifery professionals – is demanding their financial clearance from the government.
This move comes as they express their disappointment in the government’s negligence towards their needs during their one-year mandatory national service.

According to them, since commencing their service in July 2023, they have put their hearts, passion, health, and even their livelihoods on the line to serve the people of Ghana and promote a healthy society.
However, despite their commitment and dedication, they have been left to struggle, with the government failing to provide the financial clearance necessary for the payment of their national service allowances.
The leadership of the Rotational Nurses and Midwives has revealed that they made an honorable move in September 2023, submitting a letter to the Ministry of Health to request the release of the financial clearance.

However, their efforts were met with silence. A follow-up letter was sent in January 2024, but still, no official communication was received from the ministry.
As a result, they have resorted to borrowing money from market women, leaving them in a precarious situation.
The continuous silence from the Ministry of Health, combined with the economic hardship has severely impacted their daily lives.
They find themselves relying on meager meals, such as gari (a local staple), and sometimes going without sugar.
According to them, this dire situation directly contradicts the advice they provide to others regarding proper nutrition, highlighting the hypocrisy of their predicament.

In their plea release on 30th January, 2024, the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association calls upon the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Ghana, the media, other stakeholders, and compassionate Ghanaians to join them in advocating for the immediate release of their financial clearance.
They urge these organizations to engage with the relevant ministries to address the needs of these struggling professionals.
The Ministry of Health is also given a two-week ultimatum to respond positively to this demand and engage the appropriate authorities for the release of the financial clearance.
Failing a resolution, the nurses and midwives threaten to embark on a one-week peaceful protest, either by laying down their working tools or taking to the streets to demonstrate against this injustice.

Furthermore, they implore all stakeholders to ensure the necessary protocols are put in place, allowing for the release of the financial clearance for their younger colleagues before their national service begins.
