Senior Staff in Public Universities in Ghana Declare Indefinite Strike

Share:

Acceding to persistent neglect of their welfare by the government, the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) have jointly announced an indefinite strike across all public universities in Ghana.

The decision comes amidst growing concerns over critical issues related to pensions and conditions of service outlined in the Labour Act of Ghana, which have been consistently overlooked by the government.

In a press statement released on January 17, 2024, the associations cited evidence from the 17th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on November 25, 2023, revealing the government’s failure to release Tier-2 Pension contributions to the Board of Trustees for proper investment management, as mandated by the Pension Act.

Additionally, the statement addressed the illegal cancellation of the overtime allowance, directly violating the agreed conditions of service between the senior staff and the government.

The senior staff members expressed regret over the necessity of this strike but deemed it unavoidable in light of the government’s continuous disregard for their well-being.

They urge the government to urgently release the outstanding funds and reinstate the overtime allowance as stipulated by the labor laws and previous agreements.
