The University for Development Studies (UDS) has issued a formal rejoinder to clarify widespread media reports surrounding the conviction and life sentencing of Mr. Salifu Nurudeen, a former student, for the murder of his colleague, Mr. Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu.

In a statement released by the Office of the Registrar, UDS expressed deep concern over what it described as “misleading headlines and social media captions” that falsely suggest the tragic incident occurred on the university’s Nyankpala Campus during an active academic session.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the unfortunate incident did not occur on any of the campuses of the University for Development Studies,” the statement emphasised.

“At the time of the incident in September 2023, the University was officially on break. All academic activities had ended, and students had returned to their respective homes and communities.”

The University further clarified that the crime took place outside its jurisdiction and bore no connection to any of its facilities or operations.

UDS criticised the use of images such as the main campus gate in media coverage, describing it as “potentially damaging” and “unfair.”

“These sensationalised headlines may attract public attention, but they do so at the cost of truth, context, and the integrity of a reputable academic institution,” the statement read.

The University called on media houses, bloggers, and influencers to exercise greater responsibility in their reporting, urging them to avoid narratives that erode public trust and perpetuate negative stereotypes.

“Institutions such as UDS invest years in building trust, nurturing young minds, and ensuring the safety of their communities,” the Directorate of Public Affairs noted.

“Irresponsible or sensational reporting has the unintended effect of undermining these efforts.”

While expressing condolences to the family of the late Mr. Zakiu, UDS reaffirmed its commitment to campus safety and security.

“We wish to assure all parents, guardians, students, staff, and stakeholders that UDS remains a safe academic environment,” the statement concluded.
