WASSCE May Be Postponed If Government Doesn’t Pay Arrears Owed

Only Ghanaian candidates are left to write the West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), scheduled from August 1 to September 27, 2022.

This is because the other four-member countries of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) — Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia — have returned to the May/June calendar and had administered the WASSCE for their school candidates from May 9 to June 24, this year.

The four countries have had their academic calendars streamlined to enable them to write the examination in May/June, as Ghana sticks to the ‘new normal’ calendar occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

New development from Peter Notsu-kotoe, ranking member on Education committee of Parliament, indicates that WAEC still owes supervisors, invigilators and script checkers allowances for their work in the 2021 BECE, as a result of government’s inability to fulfill his promise.

“We(Parliament) met with the West African Examination Council(WAEC) to ascertain their preparedness for the Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE) this year with staging findings. It is surprising to note that WAEC still owes supervisors, invigilators and script checkers their allowances for their work in the 2021 BECE,” he stated

He further made it known that, the Government promised to pay the registration fee for all the BECE Candidates so WAEC no longer changes for the year’s BECE and WASSCE. Per their findings, the government owes WAEC a total amount of 23 million for the conduct of last year’s examination.

He opined that, if the monies are not paid by the end of next week, there are very high possibilities of postponing this year’s WASSCE.

Mr. Peter Notsu-Kotoe noted that, WAEC needs the money to print examination papers, transport them, provide for security and settle their arrears. ”It is however sad that Government is yet to release funds to them, he concluded.
