The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the temporary closure of senior high schools affected by the recent violence in the Upper East Region.

Between 20th and 26th July 2025, armed attacks on Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS resulted in fatalities, injuries, and extensive damage to school property, disrupting academic activities and sparking alarm among students, staff, and families.

In a statement released on 29th July, GES condemned the incidents and extended condolences to the bereaved families and affected communities.

The Service emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the educational rights and wellbeing of students during this crisis.

To ensure the safety of SHS 3 candidates preparing for the 2025 WASSCE, GES noted it is coordinating with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and school authorities to establish secure examination centres and special arrangements.

For SHS 1 and 2 students, alternative learning modalities are being explored to maintain academic continuity while safety assessments are ongoing.

GES also revealed that counselling services are being reinforced to help students and staff process the psychological impact of the unrest.

The service commended the Ministry of Interior for its swift evacuation efforts and reiterated its collaboration with security agencies to strengthen campus safety.

The Service concluded by urging the community leaders, parents, and stakeholders to support efforts to restore peace and maintain discipline across all affected educational institutions.
