Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has announced a new initiative aimed at promoting agricultural excellence among basic and second-cycle educational institutions.

This announcement was made during an interview on the Citizen Show on Accra 100.5 FM on Friday, August 22, 2025.
According to the Minister, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will introduce a dedicated award category as part of the annual National Farmers’ Day celebration to recognize schools that demonstrate outstanding commitment and innovation in agriculture.
The initiative, according to him, is part of the government’s broader strategy to integrate youth into the agricultural value chain and foster a culture of farming excellence from an early age.
“We want to celebrate the efforts of our young farmers and encourage more schools to take agriculture seriously,” Mr. Opoku stated.
“This award will not only recognize their hard work but also showcase their produce on national television to inspire others,” he added.
The award will spotlight schools that have successfully implemented agricultural projects, maintained productive school farms, or demonstrated creativity in sustainable farming practices.
Winning schools will have their farm produce featured on national television, offering public visibility and recognition for their efforts.
This move is expected to energize student participation in agriculture and reinforce the importance of farming as a viable career path.
By celebrating youth-led agricultural success stories, the Ministry hopes to shift perceptions and attract more young people into the sector.
The initiative also aligns with the government’s 24-hour economy policy, which emphasizes food security, innovation, and inclusive growth. Mr. Opoku noted that empowering young people through agriculture is essential to building a resilient economy and addressing rising food costs.
Stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a timely intervention that bridges the gap between classroom learning and practical application.
Many believe the award will motivate schools to invest more in agricultural education and infrastructure.
The Ministry is expected to release further details on the award criteria, nomination process, and timelines in the coming weeks.
Schools across the country are encouraged to prepare and participate actively in what promises to be a transformative addition to Ghana’s agricultural calendar.
