The Government has announced a solemn three-day programme of national mourning from Thursday, August 7 to Saturday, August 9, 2025, in honour of eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in the military helicopter crash near Obuasi.
The mourning period, declared by President John Dramani Mahama, follows the fatal incident that claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers—Dr. Edward Omane Boamah (Defence) and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (Environment, Science and Technology)—alongside senior government officials and military personnel.
According to a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the programme is designed to offer Ghanaians a moment of collective reflection and remembrance.
Programme of Events
- Thursday, August 7: Public laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House, beginning at 1:00 PM. Citizens, families, and friends are invited to participate.
- Friday, August 8: Continuation of the candle-lighting and floral tribute to allow more citizens to pay their respects.
- Saturday, August 9: Evening of Reflections and Memorials at the Forecourt of the State House, starting at 5:00 PM. This national event will bring together families of the deceased, government officials, and members of the public to honour the legacy of the fallen.
“These three days offer our nation an opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced. We urge all citizens to observe the period of national mourning with dignity and respect,” the statement read.
National flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period, and all official presidential engagements have been suspended.

GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES PROGRAMME FOR THREE DAYS OF NATIONAL MOURNING TO HONOUR THE DEPARTED
Government wishes to announce programmes for the three days of national mourning, from Thursday, 7 August to Saturday, 9 August 2025. This solemn period is dedicated to honouring the departed and providing an opportunity for national reflection and remembrance.
Activities will commence on Thursday with a public laying of flowers and lighting of candles. This act of remembrance will take place at the Ceremonial Garden at the front of the Presidency, from 1:00 pm. Members of the public, families, and friends are respectfully invited to participate.
The opportunity for the laying of flowers and lighting of candles will continue on Friday, 8 August 2025, allowing further time for citizens to express their condolences and respect.
The period of national mourning will conclude on Saturday, 9 August 2025, with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials.” This poignant event will begin at 5:00 PM at the Forecourt of the State House, where all Ghanaians and families will gather to reflect on the legacy and contributions of the departed.
These three days offer our nation a vital opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced. We urge all citizens to observe the period of national mourning with dignity and respect.
