Students Loan Trust Fund names 102 student loan defaulters, warns of legal action

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has intensified its loan recovery efforts by publicly naming 102 individuals who have defaulted on their student loan repayments.

The list, published in the August 6, 2025 edition of the Daily Graphic, marks the second batch of defaulters exposed this year, following an earlier release of 39 names.

The SLTF’s notice, dated August 4, 2025, cites Section 26 of the Students Loan Trust Fund Act, 2011 (Act 820), warning that failure to repay within one month will result in automatic court judgments.

A five percent penalty fee will also be imposed on both the borrower and their guarantor.

“Failure to repay is an admission of the debt; and shall be deemed a judgment on the amount in addition to five per cent costs entered by the Circuit Court against you and your guarantor,” the notice read.

Graduates from top institutions—including the University of Ghana, KNUST, and the University of Cape Coast—feature prominently on the list, with completion dates stretching back to 2010.

The highest outstanding balance belongs to Caleb Kolo Nsarful (University of Ghana), who owes GH¢18,623.82.

The lowest is GH¢6,343.37, owed by Gilberton Jonathan Otoo (University of Mines and Technology).

Each defaulter’s guarantor—often a parent, relative, or associate—was also named, exposing them to potential legal liability.

The SLTF reminded borrowers of their original repayment terms, which included flexible grace periods covering study duration, national service, and an additional year.

According to the SLTF, despite prior demand notices issued in March 2024 and May 2025, many borrowers have failed to comply.

Legal experts caution that unresolved debts could lead to lawsuits, wage garnishment, credit blacklisting, and long-term financial consequences.

Borrowers have been directed to settle their debts via www.sitt.gov.gh/payloan or contact the SLTF helpline at 0302 751 020.

The notice concluded with a terse advisory: “Be advised.”
